Indian Politician Arvind Kejriwal Wins TIME 100 Readers’ Poll

Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal took first place after more than 3.2 million votes were cast, followed by Narendra Modi, the frontrunner in the Indian elections, and celebrities like Katy Perry, Justin Bieber and Laverne Cox

Leader of the AAP and anti-corruption activist Arvind Kejriwal waves to supporters while campaigning on April 8, 2014 in New Delhi.
Indian politician Arvind Kejriwal has won the readers’ poll for the 2014 TIME 100, TIME’s annual list of people who influenced the world this past year for better or worse.
Celebrities like Katy Perry, Justin Bieber and Rihanna ranked high as reader favorites, but the poll turned into a competition between two men competing in India’s ongoing elections.
Kejriwal, who leads the Aam Aadmi, or common man, party, received a total of 261,114 “yes” votes from readers; Kejriwal, a candidate for a Parliamentary seat, came to prominence as the leader of an anti-corruption movement in India. Narendra Modi, the controversial leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party and frontrunner to become the country’s next Prime Minister, brought in 164,572 approving votes.
Readers could also weigh in on whether figures should not be included in the TIME 100. Modi received 166,260 “no” votes, outnumbering his total “yes” votes. The poll’s winner was decided by raw number of “yes” votes.
More than 3.2 million votes were cast in the poll. There were attempts to inflate the voting numbers, but only legitimate votes were tabulated for the final results. On Thursday, TIME will announce this year’s TIME 100 honorees, who are selected by the editors.
Rounding out the top ten finishers after Kejriwal and Modi were singer Katy Perry, singer Justin Bieber, actor Laverne Cox, actor Benedict Cumberbatch, singer Beyoncé, actor Jared Leto, actor Lupita Nyong’o, singer Lady Gaga and music duo Daft Punk.
Earlier this week, Cox and Bieber were battling for the poll’s top finisher. Cox, who appears in the Netflix series “Orange Is the New Black,” took to Twitter to encourage her fans to vote.

Narendra Modi inspired restaurant 'Namo' in Hong Kong doesn't serve dhokla but service beef and pork

MUMBAI: Months before the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh directed its cadres against chanting his name, and he asked his supporters not to invoke his name instead of the holy chant of Lord Shiva, BJP's prime ministerial aspirant Narendra Modi inspired a restaurant called, well, Namo. Not in his native Gujarat, or in his chosen additional electoral battlefield of Banaras, but in Hong Kong.

A life-sized portrait of Modi greets you at the entrance while another equally large one of Lord Shiva is placed inside the restaurant, which was launched in December last year by Rajeev Bhasin, a former manager with Delhi's Taj Mahal Hotel. NaMo, shorthand for Narendra Modi, invokes Lord Shiva for Indians and means "to bow down" in Thai, says Bhasin.

Overlooking the famous Kowloon seafront, Namo restaurant is spread over 3,800 square feet, with a seating capacity of about 130, and is ensconced in the vicinity of six top hotels in Hong Kong.

The hotel serves a variety of vegeterian and non vegetrian food including pork and beef. It has been known that the beef is exported from Gujarat in various Hong Kong hotel including Namo thai one.

Modi's visit to Hong Kong sometime in 2002, the tumultuous year when riots broke out in Gujarat on his watch as chief minister, first inspired him, says Bhasin. "I was a manager at the Viceroy restaurant in Hong Kong when I first met Modi-ji. He had no business to talk to me in restaurant but he was hard selling Gujarat and said I could contact him any time to do business there," he recalls.

Three Hong Kong-based businessmen - Raju Sabnani, Kumar Daryanani and Chandan Guria - invested close to $10 million to help Bhasin launch the restaurant. None of the three had any experience of restaurant business since they traded in electronic goods and other products in Asia and Europe.

"I, too, met Modi in 2002 in Hong Kong and have been a fan of his administrative style," says Sabnani, who is currently in India to attend a wedding in family. "When the idea of restaurant came, I was instantly ready to invest. Modi has become a brand among Indians globally." Sabnani says he is originally from Pune but has lived in Hong Kong for nearly 25 years now.

Since Modi was pressed for dates, Delhi BJP leaders Harsh Vardhan and Vijay Jolly inaugurated the restaurant. Namo restaurant's kitchen, advertised as an 'Avant-Thai' eatery, serves Thai food with Spanish fusion. Michelin-starred Spanish chef Alejandro Sanchez has teamed up with chef Wijannarongk Kunchit to create a new type of Thai food. One of the signature dishes includes the Moules Marinieres ($148), a typical French bistro dish but made with a chilli, galangal (blue ginger) and coconut broth. Then there is Angry Tiger ($168), grilled New York strip steak with Thai spicy salad served with sticky rise or vegan fried rise with tofu. Lunch per person costs Rs 1,500-Rs 2,000 while dinner is between Rs 2,500 and Rs 5,000.

Vadra-Adani pictures go viral, put Cong in spot

Vadra-Adani pictures go viral, put Cong in spot
Robert Vadra with Gautam Adani. The pictures were taken in 2009-10.
NEW DELHI: Two days after Rahul Gandhi attacked BJP's prime ministerial nominee Narendra Modi over his alleged close ties with Adani Group, photographs of Priyanka Gandhi's husband Robert Vadra with the conglomerate's promoter Gautam Adani went viral on the web.

TV channels first splashed two photographs of Vadra with Adani, dating back to 2009-10, which they said were taken during Vadra's visit to Mundra port and Adani's power plant. While news reports said Vadra had used Adani's aircraft, the company declined comment. Adani did not respond to a questionnaire seeking details of Vadra's visit.

Adani's alleged close links with Modi has taken centre stage in the charged poll campaign. First, it was Aam Admi Party which raised questions about Modi's ties with Adani and the benefit that the group had allegedly derived from its proximity to the Gujarat chief minister. Rahul Gandhi, whose party is facing allegations of crony capitalism, has also sought to deflect attention by pointing to Adani's links to Modi.

But the latest pictures from a Gujarati newspaper have put the spotlight back on the Gandhi family's ties with big business. Vadra has hit headlines for his ties with business groups such as DLF and his land deals.

The photographs were beamed by news channels and appeared on the internet around the time Vadra was seen accompanying Rahul for the filing of his nomination papers for the Amethi Lok Sabha seat on Saturday. Vadra had stayed away when Sonia Gandhi filed her nomination in Rae Bareli last week.

The BJP was quick to grab the opportunity to hit back at Rahul for his recent remark on alleged Modi-Adani links, "Advani out and Adani in". BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman said industrialists are known to know political leaders, but Rahul should explain what Vadra was doing with Adani.

After having kept a low profile since his "mango people" (common man) remark that drew flak, Vadra resurfaced on Thursday when he accompanied Priyanka to the polling booth in New Delhi's Lodhi Estate.

Jashodaben is my wife, Narendra Modi admits under oath

Jashodaben is my wife, Narendra Modi admits under oath
In his nomination form for the Vadodara Lok Sabha seat, which he filed amid much fanfare on Wednesday, he entered the name of Jashodaben as his wife.
VADODARA: Married at 17 to a bride about his age, BJP's PM candidate Narendra Modi has admitted for the first time under oath that he has a wife.

In his nomination form for the Vadodara Lok Sabha seat, which he filed amid much fanfare on Wednesday, he entered the name of Jashodaben as his wife. She is a retired school teacher in Brahmanwada, a village about 35km from Modi's hometown, Vadnagar.

Now 63, the former RSS pracharak had left the column blank in the last four state assembly elections in 2001, 2002, 2007 and 2012. This was first openly challenged in pamphlets distributed by Congress in January 2001 when Modi contested the by-election to the Rajkot-2 assembly seat, three months after becoming Gujarat CM.

His opponents hope that this disclosure will dent his popularity among women who might empathize with Jashodaben, whom he never returned to after two weeks of their nuptials.

The declaration is reported to have come after strict legal advice that he come clean on the marriage which, his family members say, was never consummated.

As per the Representation of the People Act, 1951, every candidate is required to declare even assets held in the name of the spouse. In his nomination form, Modi has said he has no information about Jashodaben's income, IT returns and PAN details.

The Supreme Court in November last year had refused to entertain a PIL accusing Modi of leaving the column on marital status blank in the nomination papers for the Maninagar assembly seat in 2012.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice P Sathasivam and Justice Ranjan Gogoi rejected the plea on the ground that such issues should be dealt with by the Election Commission. This time the EC had said that candidates must fill every column of the declaration or face the risk of disqualification.

In the run-up to Modi filing his nomination papers, there had been intense speculation as to how he would describe his marital status. Addressing a rally at Sujanpur in Himachal Pradesh in mid-February, Modi had said, "I have no familial ties, who would I ever try to benefit through corruption?" To which Arvind Kejriwal had responded by saying, "Modi has told us that 'I'm not married, I don't have a family. Why will I want to indulge in corruption? 'But nobody looks after me like my wife. She takes care of me and if I ever do something wrong, she stops me."

Modi also listed his assets — amounting to about Rs 1.50 crore — in his nomination form. They include cash in hand worth Rs 29,700, bank deposits of about Rs 44 lakh, infrastructure bonds of Rs 20,000 and National Savings Certificates worth Rs 4.34 lakh. He had purchased real estate worth Rs 2.47 lakh, the market value of which is now about Rs 1 crore.

BJP’s election manifesto is for, by and of Narendra Modi

Several sections of the manifesto were also a throwback to the promises the party had made in Gujarat before the 2012 assembly elections. Neeraj Priyadarshi
Several sections of the manifesto were also a throwback to the promises the party had made in Gujarat before the 2012 assembly elections. Neeraj Priyadarshi

The BJP finally released its 2014 manifesto Monday, and the document came with a definite imprint of the party’s prime ministerial candidate,Narendra Modi, including three personal assurances by him — to work hard to the end, to never act in “bad faith”, and to never act out of self interest.
In fact, the manifesto is so closely based on Modi’s views that it seems like an expanded version of a document titled ‘Vision of Modi’ that was widely circulated at a BJP strategy meeting in January. Gujarat before the 2012 assembly elections.
“The party has entrusted me with a certain responsibility. I want to make three promises personally — I will never be found wanting on hard work, I will not do anything for myself and I will not do anything with bad intent,” Modi said at the launch of the much-awaited election document.
The idea of starting an IIT and an AIIMS in all states, a ‘Beti Bachao’ programme, building 100 smart cities besides focusing on twin cities and satellite cities, a golden quadrilateral of bullet trains – christened diamond quadrilateral in the manifesto – a price stabilisation fund to check inflation, a national agriculture market, preventive healthcare for all, besides the interlinking of rivers, were all part of Modi’s “vision”.
Even Modi’s focus on “Brand India”, which emphasises on what he calls the 5Ts – talent, trade, tradition, tourism and technology – finds a place in the manifesto.
While stopping short of announcing a special package for West Bengal and Bihar, the manifesto talks of regional disparities between the western and eastern parts of India, just like Modi has been.
One of Modi’s newer ideas, expressed at an interaction with lawyers led by Ram Jethmalani, of developing India into a “global hub for arbitration and legal process outsourcing” is a part of the BJP’s plans to overhaul the judicial system.
The manifesto also seemed to borrow liberally from the promises the party had made in the poll document for the 2012 Gujarat Assembly elections, including adopting the Gujarati slogan ‘Sauno Saath, Sauna Vikaas’ to the 2014 Hindi slogan of ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’.
The national manifesto promises to protect the cow and its progeny just as the 2012 Gujarat manifesto did.
“In view of the contribution of cow and its progeny to agriculture, socio-economic and cultural life of our country, the department of animal husbandry will be suitably strengthened and empowered for the protection of cow and its progeny. Necessary legal framework will be created to protect and promote cow and its progeny. A National Cattle Development Board will be set up to implement a programme for the improvement of indigenous livestock breeds,” the document released Monday said.
On e-governance, the 2014 manifesto promises that the government will directly reach out to the people through pro-active, pro-people, good governance; digitise government records to make them easily available; and implement Gujarat’s ‘E-Gram, Vishwa Gram’ scheme nationwide.
The 2012 manifesto said Gujarat had earned global recognition through its mantra of pro-active, pro-people, good governance; promised to make available a digital copy of all government records at the panchayat level and strengthen the panchayat system with the help of ‘E-Gram, Vishwa Gram’.
Focusing on minorities and equal opportunities, the 2014 manifesto says minority educational systems and institutions will be strengthened and modernised and a national madrasa modernisation programme will be initiated. The Gujarat manifesto had also promised to improve the quality of education at madrasas by introducing technology and modernising them.
While the 2014 manifesto talks about middle-income housing, medical insurance and quality healthcare services for the “neo middle class”, the Gujarat manifesto had promised ‘Ghar Nu Ghar’ (own your home) for this group under the ‘Mukhya Mantri Garib Shehri Gruh Samrudhi Yojana’ and free treatment for up to Rs 2 lakh under the ‘Mukhyamantri Amrutam Yojana’ for cancer and serious illnesses related to the heart, kidney and brain.
Both manifestos also promise to develop twin cities and satellite towns, boosting urban transport systems, providing public wi-fi services and a focus on urban poverty alleviation programmes. They also talk about encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship among youths through special training programmes.
Backed with a manifesto that articulates his worldview, Modi promised good governance and all-inclusive, nationwide development that will pull India out from the “ditch of despondency and inaction” he said it is currently stuck in.
He said the manifesto is not an election ritual but “our direction, our goal and our commitment”. Indicating a “zero tolerance” on internal and external security, Modi said the need of the hour is to bring a “strong government in New Delhi”.
“No one should be able to bully India…we should be able to look everyone in the eye, others should want to talk to us,” Modi said, as party president Rajnath Singh and even senior leader L K Advani rallied behind him.
Reinforcing the predominance and acceptability of Modi, Rajnath said that when the BJP projected him as its PM candidate, many political parties treated him as an “untouchable” in politics and claimed that no other leader had faced as much criticism as Modi.
Today, Rajnath said, as many as 25 political parties had allied with the party.

BJP manifesto: Is Narendra Modi’s big idea Narendra Modi?

While the Election Commission may have given the go ahead to the BJP to release its manifesto on the first day of polling, but the delay in the release of the document has only fed the speculation of a possible division in the party. Apart from its stand on issues like the Ram Mandir, Article 370 and the Uniform Civil Code, the manifesto doesn't read too different from what the ruling Congress party has promised in its own document, say critics. The Congress has even gone to the extent of claiming that the BJP has copied its document. So is there a dramatic new idea that the BJP speaks of in their manifesto? "The big idea is that Narendra Modi will make an impact on the elections, and Narendra Modi's big idea is Narendra Modi," author Shankar Aiyyar said during a debate on CNN-IBN show India at 9.
The BJP releasing its manifesto. AFP
"They have a brand and product that has been projected as both the solution and the idea. Take the face of Modi away from the BJP manifesto, and put it on the Congress manifesto the optics will change. The collapse of governance in the last few years has made the persona of Modi so attractive," Aiyyar said. "The country is facing inflation because the UPA pumped in too much money and couldn't deliver on the outcomes. Now Modi says he will deliver efficiently, and that is the difference. But they haven't mentioned how they will reduce the deficit, but then no other party has either," he said. Despite the skepticism, BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said that Modi will actually deliver on the promises that have been made in the document. "Ek Bharat shreshth Bharat is our big idea. We will take everyone along. BJP stands for the youth, senior citizens and the poor. Modi is of the opinion that every government must stand for the poor and poor alone. India needs lack of policy paralysis, it needs a decision making process. Modi said that he will work without any ill-will, This along with the manifesto becomes the hope for India," Prasad said. Congress spokesperson Rajeev Gowda was expectedly critical of the opposition party's manifesto. "This is 40-50 pages of camouflage and is just about Hindutva issues. They say foreign investment, but not in multi-brand retail. They opposed goods and services tax, and now they want to implement that," he said. "We have kept India's economic growth moving forward in times of economic troubles. We have paid attention to people at the bottom of the pyramid, who the BJP wont pay attention to in their run for crony capitalism," Gowda claimed. Prasad retorted by saying that the BJP believed in delivery  and their track record showed it. "India is too wise to fall for the hyperbole of Congress. The larger issue is the way India has been governed. The BJP will provide a corruptio-free India. For the last 13 years Modi has held the helm in Gujarat, and it has never been questioned," he said. Prasad attempted defended the the late release of the manifesto saying it was purely due to logistical reasons. "Logistical problem of availability of all leaders delayed the manifesto. On a day when our manifesto has been appreciated, the release date is a mundane issue," the BJP spokesperson said. However, N Ram of The Hindu said he did not buy such an explanation and there must have been a rift in the party over the document. "I don't buy the explanation. This is the digital age. There was an internal problem. I have been studying the BJP manifesto for years," he said. The senior journalist questioned the need for the BJP to bring in the issues of the Ram temple, Article 370 of the Constitution on Kashmir and the Uniform Civil Code. "If the issue today is employment and inflation, then why put those other things in? From 1999-2004 these things -- Ram Temple, Hindutva -- found no place at all in BJP, and they did very well for themselves," Ram said. The BJP claims that the elections will be fought only on core issues like corruption, development and inflation. "On the Ram Janmabhoomi issue, the Allahabad High Court has stated that Muslims have failed to provide proof, this is an issue of our faith," he said. "We speak of article of 370 because the backward classes in Jammu and Kashmir are not getting benefit from the Mandal commission. This election will be fought only and only on the issues of corruption," he said. Some like CNN-IBN's Bhupendra Choubey feel that the BJP's manifesto is, like its peers, not rooted in reality. "It speaks of dreams. It is a dream world manifesto. When we are borrowing 69 crore a day is the BJP supposed to give a time frame for reducing fiscal profligacy?" he said. The BJP retorted by saying that making promises was part of every elections but it didn't mean there weren't any ideas that couldn't be implemented. "Occasionally Modi has been voicing ideas during rallies and it has been received well. This manifesto is the embodiment of the ideas," he said.
