Although he was freed on bail in December, he remains disqualified from parliament and cannot contest elections.
Legendary singer Manna Dey died at the age of 94 on 24 October. Dey chalked up a number of hit Bollywood songs in a career spanning six decades and won several awards for his contribution to music.
In November, India successfully launched Mangalyaan - a spacecraft to the Red Planet - with the aim of becoming the fourth space agency to reach Mars. The Mars Orbiter Mission is set to travel for 300 days and reach Mars orbit in 2014.

In December, the Supreme Court upheld a 153-year-old colonial-era law which criminalises gay sex, in a ruling seen as a major blow to gay rights. After street protests and criticism from activists and even ministers, the government filed a petition in the Supreme Court asking it to review its decision
London-based auction house Christie's raised more than $15m (£9m) at its first-ever art sale in India, doubling its pre-sale expectations. The top seller was a painting by artist Vasudeo A Gaitonde, which sold for $3.7m - a record for a modern Indian work.
