In June, 25-year-old Bollywood actress Jiah Khan was found dead at her home in Mumbai and police said she had killed herself. The actress made her debut in 2007 with Amitabh Bachchan in Nishabd, based on the novel Lolita. She also acted with Aamir Khan and Akshay Kumar.

Early monsoon rains, believed to be the heaviest in 80 years, led to devastating floods and landslides in the northern state of Uttarakhand in June. More than 5,000 people were killed and over 100,000 people were evacuated from the Himalayan mountains.

Ten years after India and Pakistan agreed a ceasefire along the Line of Control (LoC) that divides Kashmir between the two countries, mortars and shells were once again exchanged on the disputed border this year with both sides accusing each other of violating the ceasefire agreement.

In September, India's main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party named controversial politician Narendra Modi as its prime ministerial candidate for next year's elections. Mr Modi has been campaigning extensively since then for his party, addressing rallies all over the country.

On 13 September, a court sentenced four men to death for the horrific gang rape and murder of a student on a bus in the capital, Delhi, last December. The case led to violent protests across India and new laws against rape.

In October, charismatic politician and former railways minister Laloo Prasad Yadav was jailed for five years after being found guilty of embezzling state funds intended to buy food for cattle. Although he was freed on bail in December, he remains disqualified from parliament and cannot contest elections.

Legendary singer Manna Dey died at the age of 94 on 24 October. Dey chalked up a number of hit Bollywood songs in a career spanning six decades and won several awards for his contribution to music.

In November, India successfully launched Mangalyaan - a spacecraft to the Red Planet - with the aim of becoming the fourth space agency to reach Mars. The Mars Orbiter Mission is set to travel for 300 days and reach Mars orbit in 2014.

London-based auction house Christie's raised more than $15m (£9m) at its first-ever art sale in India, doubling its pre-sale expectations. The top seller was a painting by artist Vasudeo A Gaitonde, which sold for $3.7m - a record for a modern Indian work.
