‘Modi can’t become PM on hollow development claims’

Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi’s political secretary Ahmed Patel on Friday said that Chief Minister Narendra Modi could not realise his dreams of becoming prime minister on the basis of “hollow claims of development”.

Addressing volunteers taking part in the “Vikas Khoj Padyatra” (Footmarch for Exploring Development) of the Gujarat Pradesh Youth Congress (GPYC) in Bharuch, about 180 km from here, Patel claimed that the Congress-led UPA would again come to power at the centre.

“If Modi’s claim of development is true, then why should there be 18 lakh educated unemployed youths in the state? Why are schools without classrooms and teachers and why are more than five lakh youths employed in teaching, health and police department on part-time contract basis?” he asked.

“This proves that Modi’s claim of development is hollow and intended only for publicity purposes to gain political mileage in and outside the state,” Patel said. “Employing youths, who are key factor for development, on contract basis amounts to their exploitation,”

Patel, who has represented Bharuch for three terms in the Lok Sabha and is currently a member of the Rajya Sabha, said.“Modi government can offer a dole of Rs 33,000 crore to Tata, but has no policy for Gujarati  youths.

It can’t even pay Rs 3,300 to youths on contract employment,” said Patel. “Modi should tell for whom his government is working — for people or corporates?” he said Patel, who marched on foot for five kilometres, from Paanch Batti in Bharuch town to the outskirts of Ankleshwar with youth Congress workers, said “Modi’s model of development is taking Gujarat backward in education and health.”

“Whatever development has taken place in cities, like Vadodara and Ahmedabad, it is due to the financial contributions of the UPA government at the Centre,” claimed Patel.

He said that the youth Congress’ padyatra would expose the alleged “false” claims of development by Modi and create awareness among the youths and the general public.  Referring to Modi as “feku” CM, Indian Youth Congress (IYC) president Rajiv Satav said that even basic amenities like drinking water were missing in Hatkeshwar and other areas of Maninagar Assembly constituency.

“There are no proper health and education facilities in Maninagar, the Assembly constituency represented by Modi,” Satav said.
The “padyatra” started from Ahmedabad on January 18. It will end at Bardoli on February 23. Aimed at mobilising youths in favour of the Congress in the 2014 LS polls, the padyatra will cover seven LS and 33 Assembly segments in central and south Gujarat.
