New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his MLAs will defy prohibitory orders and protest outside the North Block office of Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, but he has asked supporters and others not to join him. The Aam Aadmi Party government wants three Delhi Police cops suspended by 10 am today.
HERE ARE THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:
- Mr Kejriwal has shared today's plans in tweets. "I alongwid all ministers and MLAs, will sit on dharna outside home min office for the sake of women security (sic)," he said. He also tweeted last evening, "In view of republic day preps, i urge supporters and public not to come for dharna. Only MLAs will sit. No one else shud come pl."
- The Delhi Police has imposed prohibitory orders in and around Parliament House, an area that includes the North and South Blocks which house government offices. The Section 144 imposed outlaws the assembly of more than five people in an area.
- Mr Kejriwal has demanded action - suspension or at least a transfer - against cops who, he says, refused to cooperate with his Law Minister Somnath Bharti in cracking down on an alleged drug and prostitution racket. He also wants action against a policeman who had a showdown with another minister Rakhi Birla over a dowry case.
- The Chief Minister has also accused the police of mishandling a gang-rape case; a 51-year-old Danish tourist was gang raped early last week in the heart of Delhi.
- Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi has refused to suspend the cops. About today's AAP protest, Mr Bassi said, "Whatever has to be done according to law will be done."
- Mr Kejriwal and his three ministers had met the Home Minister last week to seek his intervention.
- The Delhi Police reports to the Centre and not the state government. Mr Kejriwal told Mr Shinde at their Friday meeting that the AAP government wants control of the Delhi Police transferred to the state government to ensure better policing.
- The Home Ministry has sought a report from the Delhi Police on the three incidents. Official sources said the Home Ministry wanted to know facts in the cases before deciding on action against the policemen.
- Women workers from the Congress will protest in Delhi today demanding Mr Bharti's arrest for his midnight raid at a locality in South Delhi last Wednesday.
- The Delhi Police have reportedly informed Mr Kejriwal about an alleged Indian Mujahideen plan to abduct him and advised him to accept Z category security. But Mr Kejriwal has refused. He accused the police of "playing politics with my security" and also tweeted, "Police officials met me in afternoon. Informed me about threat. Asked me not to disclose it to media. Then they themselves went and told media."Source - NDTV
