Arvind Kejriwal leaves for North Block to hold dharna outside Shinde's office

New Delhi: In an unprecedented situation, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his cabinet colleagues plan to sit on dharna outside Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde on Monday demanding action against Delhi Police personnel for alleged dereliction of duty.

Kejriwal is currently on the way to the North Block to hold the dharna.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which rose to power riding the wave created by Anna Hazare's Jan Lokpal movement, is adamant on its demand that policemen who allegedly refused to cooperate with Law Minister Somnath Bharti in cracking down on a suspected drug and prostitution racket in South Delhi, be suspended or atleast transferred.

The Delhi Police, which reports to the Lt Governor, has stood its ground against taking action without a thorough probe. Also, the police have contended they could not have taken any action solely based on Bharti's orders.

In view of the planned dharna by AAP, the police have imposed Section 144 in central Delhi district, thereby making it highly unlikely that Kejriwal would be allowed to protest outside the North Block office of Shinde.

Strict vigil is being maintained at all roads leading to the area. As the dress rehearsals for Republic Day parade are being conducted on Rajpath, the security of the area is also being looked after the Indian Army.

If denied entry into Rajpath, AAP protesters may head to Shinde's residence located on Krishna Menon Marg, reports said.

As per Shinde's official engagements for the day, the Home Minister is scheduled to attend a function at Vigyan Bhavan at 10.30 am.

There is also a possibility that Kejirwal and others would be detained if they try to defy prohibitory orders, reports said.

Currently, Kejriwal is said to be holding a meeting with other ministers at the Delhi Secretariat. Media reports claimed that he was waiting for a response from Lt Governor Najeeb Jung.

On Friday, Kejriwal, accompanied by cabinet colleagues Manish Sisodia, Somnath Bharti and Rakhi Birla, had met Shinde and demanded suspension of the "guilty" policemen by 10 am today.

The AAP government had also sought action against a policeman who had a tiff with Women and Child Development Minister Rakhi Birla in Sagarpur of West Delhi over a dowry death case. The Chief Minister had also blamed police for the way in which it handled the gang-rape case of a Danish tourist on Tuesday.

The Home Ministry has, meanwhile, sought a report from the Delhi Police over the three incidents. Official sources said the Home Ministry wanted to know the facts in the cases before deciding on taking action against policemen.

The BJP has hit out at the AAP government and said that it is not focusing on governance. "The AAP is more comfortable doing a dharna than in the Sachivalaya," senior party leader Arun Jaitley said in his blog
