Arvind Kejriwal in hospital, police files case against his sit-in

The Delhi Police have registered an FIR against the Aam Aadmi Party's protesters for demonstration near Rail Bhavan in the heart of the city. Mr Kejriwal called off his demonstration yesterday after Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung, who is the Centre's representative in Delhi, promised to fast-track an inquiry against policemen targeted by Mr Kejriwal's party for alleged inaction.

  1. Arvind Kejriwal, who staged a 33-hour protest and spent a night on the road, was today admitted to hospital.
  2. On Tuesday evening, surrounded by supporters, Mr Kejriwal announced that he is truncating his protest in the heart of the capital. (Read)
  3. However, the Chief Minister warned, "If any woman of Delhi is attacked, then we will not sit quietly."
  4. Mr Kejriwal had been sitting on protest near the Rail Bhavan since Monday morning when he was stopped en route to the Home Ministry, where he had planned to demonstrate against Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde.
  5. Violence erupted on Tuesday as the police clashed with supporters of Mr Kejriwal, some of who tried to storm through barricades and threw stones at riot police. (Pics)
  6. The Chief Minister's sit-in created traffic jams, forced the shutdown of major metro stations, and threatened to impede arrangements needed for the Republic Day parade on Sunday.
  7. Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung has said that he will expedite an investigation against five Delhi police officers accused of inaction by Mr Kejriwal and his ministers. The policemen refused to make a series of arrests ordered by AAP ministers who alleged they were fighting for women's safety.
  8. The police officers say didn't have the needed warrants.
  9. Two of those police officers have been forced to go on leave, as part of the compromise offered to Mr Kejriwal.
  10. Mr Kejriwal wants control of the Delhi Police, which reports to the Centre, transferred to his government.
